Santa sack reveal!

Once again I participated in Cheryll's Santa sack and I received my parcel last week from Linda .

It Included a lovely knitted stocking to put all the gifts in and I was so looking forward to opening it when Cheryll gave us the go-ahead.

Well today's the day!!
I was so pleased with what Linda had sent - all very thoughtful and sweet gifts.

It included a lovely Xmas bunting , a vintage table cloth , a lovely mug, some hand warmers ,  soap chocolate and a lovely little dove and heart for my tree. They are really special and I must thank. Linda for putting together such a great package.

I also wanted to show the two little "Ducky" bags I made for my friend for her grandchildren - she wanted them for carrying the bread to feed the ducks so I came up with these and she is thrilled with them.

Woe is me!!!

I am sitting here feeling very sorry for myself with a streaming cold when I wanted to be out Xmas shopping. So instead I have spent the day making mini- Xmas stockings for my daughter for her end of term party at the out of school club.  They are a new pattern from Heather Duff at Kiwi Kreations  She produces some lovely designs and these have stitched out really well.  Still have a couple more to do

Last weekend we had a lovely Xmas lunch at my quilt group and we all decided it would be good to try and get away on a weekend together so I have been busy organising it this week. We have secured a booking for April and so far 11 have committed to going so it should be a good weekend.

I have completed another two quilt tops-the Irish Chain Rose quilt  and the country style scrappy so that means I have 3 ready for quilting so as soon as I have finished all the Xmas bits and pieces I will have to try and get them quilted and finished.
I added an appliqué border of vines and flowers.

My Santa sack exchange arrived from Linda -it's a Santa Sock with lots of lovely squashy parcels which I have to wait to open !!

So I hope I feel better quickly or my shopping will really be last minute as I still have a few things to get for my son and his girl friend before they arrive home next weekend. !!!

Santa sack posting!

I have just posted off  my Santa sack to my partner Linda - this year my partner lives only about 30 miles away ! - so hopefully it should be there in a couple of days

I have not done much sewing this week but have managed a couple of paintings ! This is the first time I have painted for about 8 months and enjoyed getting back to it.  I hope to give these as Xmas presents but it has spurred me on to try and paint a bit more regularly.
This is Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland

This is Buttermere in the Lake District.

And this is a robin for a Xmas card.

It feels like Christmas is coming fast now with the 1st December tomorrow!

Christmas is coming!

This is the lovely card I received from Susan as part of Sheila's postcard swop - so it really feels that Christmas is coming fast!

We went to lovely Artists market yesterday in Richmond and saw some lovely work by local crafts people. In particular I was so pleased to meet Fiona who blogs at MarmaladeRose.blogspot.co.uk. And who I have been following for a while.  She is a very talented lady who makes some wonderful felt items including pictures of animals and bags with little elves on them.
This is her Mr Fox picture which is just stunning to see. Do have a look at her blog and etsy shop.

I was prompted to try and get started on some Xmas gifts and came across an IPad cushion  by teresadownunder on her blog at mypatchwork.wordpress.com. So I have spent the day trying out a prototype and tweaking it to get the dimensions right  and have finished one for the I pad and one for my Kindle.

This is the one for the Kindle

This is the slightly bigger one for the I Pad.

I intend making them for family and friends as we all seem to be using these types of kit and as an occupational therapist I am quite concerned that we will all end  up with neck and back problems from being hunched over them for hours on end so these will help with our posture. I am using the IPad version to type up this and it does make it a more user friendly angle to type  at.

So only about another 8 to make - but I will enjoy choosing fabric for each of them to match each recipient!

I did go the big Knitting and stitching show in Harrogate with a friend this week but was disappointed  some of the main patchwork suppliers seems to have given it a miss - there were more stands dedicated to wool -but bought some of Lynnette Anderson's lovely new fabric but can't decide what to make with it yet!
So will have to use the Internet to order a few items I was looking forward to buying.   Just as well I now have my I pad cushion while I do my Xmas shopping on line aswell!!!!

Colourul Kids Quilts

After a complete disaster at my quilt group with my I Spy quilt where I tried a split 9 patch design without thinking about the orientation of the picture blocks UHHH!  -   I had to start again and ended up with a simple block design which has worked well and I did not waste any of my picture blocks.

It is backed with some lovely snuggly fleece and I hope will prove popular with little Arthur - while his new brother gets the transport quilt.

The transport quilt uses my favourite applique designs from KiwiKreations - I have used these before and they are lovely designs. I decided to do a strip quilt this time as I found this great fabric with trucks and lorries and did not want to cut it up too much.

There has been a blog hop this week "Just for the Boys" and there have been some great ideas for future project.

So just need to get these off into the post to keep these little ones cosy as the weather turns colder.

Now to get on with xmas cards and a few xmas gifts  plus a request for another little knitted cardigan for another friend's new granddaughter.

Time passing!

The year seems to be flying past and I am starting my Xmas projects this week - a couple of table runners using a new pattern with machine embroidery already completed and I will be starting Xmas cards today.

I have also hung my landscape in my sewing room which I did on the retreat.

I was so pleased with it that I designed and finished another wall hanging using some poppy designs I had and that is almost ready to hang as well

I am also making a baby quilt with transport designs for my good friend's new grandson, but have decided I need to make  another quick quilt for his older brother who is now 2 so I have ordered a pack of I spy fabrics as I thought that's would make good play quilt for him.
So lots to get done and everyone keeps talking about how many weeks left until Xmas!!!!

Quilting Retreat news

I have just got back from a wonderful weekend near Scarborough on a quilting weekend with some friends from the quilt group I belong to. We stayed with Maggie Martin who is a great teacher and hostess.  She has a wonderful house with a large teaching room and cooked some delicious meals for us. We were able to work on individual projects with Maggie providing tuition and support to each of us.   We had to be encouraged to pack up each night and go to bed as we were still at it  at 11 pm every night. !!!

I planned to make a landscape quilt and learned such a lot - here is the end result which I am very pleased with.

We have booked to go again but she cannot fit us in until November 2014!!!!   She is so popular and gets booked up.

Since returning I have started another art quilt of poppies and am intending to try another landscape as well to consolidate what I leant.
I have also finished off some items for a swap I am in and also a couple of postcards but I am so enthused by the art quilts I now want to make .

But with Xmas looming I must start thinking about making some items for Xmas !!
Bye for now

Lost mojo!!!

I seem to have found it difficult to achieve anything over the last few weeks - more family illness and then a dose of flu myself has meant I have not been able to finish off any WIP's but have managed to complete a few small projects such as fabric postcards, mug rugs and table centres.

I've also started a new quilt which is pierced by hand - it's a star / flower pattern which is great for picking up and doing a bit of when I feel like it.
And then this weekend  I have a visit to London to see our son and of course a visit to the Knitting and Stitching show which is always a treat. So let's hope the weather is good and my cough improves!!

Super Sampler!

Just a quick update from yesterday - I have put the sampler quilt together and it just needs the borders quilted  and then binding - it's turned out really big!

Now for the quilting on the scrappy blocks quilt!

Not going away!!!

We cancelled our trip to the Lake District because of the weather - high winds are not good for caravaners- so had some unexpected time to sew!!

Started this scrappy quilt using my new sizzix dies and I am really pleased with it so far - the dies cut the fabric so well that the triangles line up and cause few problems.  I intend to hand quilt this one when we go away next week instead.

I also have started machine quilting the Pink Applecore - I backed it with some large squares and then decided to quilt with just straight line in one direction- have done just under half so far as its a bit mind numbingly boring!!!! - but I like the look of of it so will keep going in short bursts.

The Irish Rose chain is coming along - just a few more blocks and then I will get it put together.

Also enjoying the Butterflies which I am appliquing by hand in the evening -not sure how I will arrange them but I like the way they are turning out.

I read a post about using the IPad to orgainse your quilting life and find that I have  already started by keeping a list of WIPs and also a supplies list of things I run out of and need to replace.  The worrying thing is finding that I have 9 things on my WIP list and another list of 9 things I am desperate to start !!  So I need to use this week to finish off a few things before my trip to London where I want to look for some jelly rolls to try some of the patterns from my Craftsy classes. I also find the iPad great for using Pinterest to organise pictures I find on the Internet for future ideas and of course where would I be with out Blogs to inspire and encourage me!!

My big sampler is coming together aswell so hopefully will get that finished this week. So the high winds have meant lots of sewing.

Northumberland - Sunshine and History!

We are back from Northumberland and I have some great photos of some of the iconic views of the area.
First are some shots  on Holy Island or Lindisfarne and inside the old church which was hosting a flower festival celebrating the history of the Island.

This is the Castle on the island

A lovely view from the abbey ruins

The weather was brilliant and we did lots of walking   -- and eating with the friends we were with!

The beaches are so quiet and beautiful - we are definitely going back again next year for a longer holiday.

Once back I have tried to get back into finishing off some WIPs - the red and white one just needs quilting and the little tumbler table cloth is finished.  It's still very hot here in the UK - to  our surprise so it's not the weather for quilting but I want to finish off the sampler quilt this week before I start the new Irish Rose -  I spent yesterday cutting all the pieces for it

I found this lovely 30s style butterfly quilt on Pinterest - and I have  started my version by hand with my 30s fabrics and have managed 4 so far

So looking forward for a day quilting with my quilt group buddies on  Saturday

Sunny Scarborough and sewing

Well- back home from Sunny Scarborough where I just had to visit the Sewing shop a couple of times!!   I bought some lovely fabrics having seen a pattern for a quilt using a panel of fabulous roses I have had for ages and did not know what to do with it. The pattern is called Irish Rose and so that's definitely the next big project. BUT I am pushing on with the sampler quilt and now have about a third of the blocks quilted using the quilt as you go method - otherwise it will just be too big to handle in this weather!!

I also finished off  this lap quilt using a Moda scrap bag and have some lovely fleece to use as backing which will make it snuggle.

This is a little buggy quilt which I made using my new book "Quick and Easy Hexi Quilts" which does not use EPP but uses circles to produce the hexi.  It works really well and was ideal to do on holiday. It is for a friend's daughter who is expecting her second baby in September.

This is my sack for the Santa Sack Swop organised by the wonderful Cheryll at GoneStitchin - I can't show it all as my partner might peep.

Our next trip is to Northumberland - we have not been there for 7 years as the last time we went we could not see the sea or the castle at Bamburgh for the fog for 4 days out of the 5 we were there- so here's hoping the fine weather lasts and we get some lovely sunny weather to visit some of those wonderful beaches and castles.
I missed the Festival of Quilts this year but will be at theKnitting &Stitching Show in London in October for some serious shopping!!!

What a winner-- and a GIVE AWay!!!

Despite a trip to the dentist and a large filling that made me feel sorry for myself -- I was cheered up when I received an email to say that I had won a Cratsy class courtesy of  Katie  At Swim, Bike,Quilt.!!!!

She has just launched her yearly drive for quilts for children and has some great prizes to win. I am going to donate  disappearing 9 patch I have just made and just have to finish binding It. You can see her post on her blog.

I already have some crafty classes which I have dipped in and out of but to be given the chance to choose a new one for free!!!  Well I just couldn't make up my mind which one to have - particularly as I get really tempted by the art quilt ones BUT I decided to go for a more traditional class and decided on Quilting Quickly II by Jenny Doan.

I have watched a lot of her U Tube videos but now I can watch a range of classes which showcase her approach using ready cuts.  I have already watched her class on Drunkards Path and I am itching to start one!

As I have been lucky this week I thought I would have a Give Away!!! BUT it it is only for UK followers as it is  for the Festival of Quilts at Birmingham on the 8th - 11th-August.  I have two spare tickets for any day at the festival so if you can get there just leave a comment telling me what would be the highlight of the show for you.  I will make the  draw on Friday 2 nd August and post them to the winner by first class post.

As we have continued to have such HOT weather I have been machine embroidering this week as well as doing some crocheting.   I made this sweet little birth sampler from a pattern at Kwiwi Kreations for my good friend's daughter who has had her second baby  and also the little boots which
she loved so much for her first baby.

I have also made a couple of XMas items but these are for the Santa Sack Swap so I can't show them just yet.

Off on a short break next week to the coast so hope the weather stays warm and will be taking my crocheting and hexis projects with me.
